About the Architect
The Architect Behind the Audit.
Opie, our openly-AI guide, is the friendly voice you'll meet on this site. The design thinking behind the audit comes from a working architect who has spent a career on places where people live, heal, and work.

A career spent designing for people
I'm Randy Kopplin, a registered architect. For more than fifty years I've designed buildings: senior living communities, medical offices, and commercial projects, roughly $300 million in project work in all.
The building types were different. The job never was. Every one of them had to work, quietly and every day, for the people who use it.
What senior living taught me
Senior living is where the small details stop being invisible. In a building designed for older adults, the threshold, the lighting in the hallway at night, and the placement of every handhold are decided on purpose, because they matter every single day.
Most homes were never designed that way. They were built for a different stage of life, and then life moved on while the house stayed put.
The good news is that the changes that matter most are usually small: better light, a firmer handhold, a clear path, a smoother threshold. None of it has to make your home feel clinical. Staying independent at home is a design problem, and design problems have design solutions.
Why I built the audit
Almost no family ever has an architect walk through the house with them. It costs real money, and most people wouldn't know to ask.
So I took the questions I'd ask on a site visit (the entry, the bathroom, the stairs, the hallway, the lighting) and turned them into a short audit anyone can take from the kitchen table. You answer a few questions about your home, and you get an Independence Score and a clear picture of where to start. No fear and no pressure, just a designer's eye on the questions most people never think to ask.
What to expect
- The audit is free and takes about three minutes. You'll get your Independence Score whether or not you ever buy anything.
- We're not a contractor. We don't do installs or remodeling work. This is guidance to help you decide what's worth doing and where to start.
- One optional upgrade. If you want more, the Complete Audit (our full Independence Blueprint) is a written plan built from your answers. It's $47, one time, with no subscription.
